NatureofBias 2023
Speakers
Louise Antony
UMass Amherst
Professor Antony's work focuses on how mentality can be realized in a physical world, taking a naturalistic approach to issues in epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and feminist theory. She has argued-somewhat paradoxically-that bias is not inherently bad; it plays a constructive role in human epistemic and emotional life.
Mahzarin Banaji
Harvard University
Professor Banaji studies thinking and feeling as they unfold in social context, with a focus on mental systems that operate in implicit mode. She studies social attitudes and beliefs in adults and children, especially those that have roots in group membership.
Michael Brownstein
John Jay College / Graduate Center, CUNY
Professor Brownstein writes about science and ethics, with emphasis on leveraging the insights of the social sciences to create change in societies fractured by intergroup conflict. His current research focuses on the moral and political psychology of climate change.
Tina Eliassi-Rad
Northeastern University
Professor Eliassi-Rad works at the intersection of AI and Network Science, and cares
about the impact of science and technology on disadvantaged members of society. Her algorithms have been incorporated into systems used by governments and industry (e.g., IBM System G Graph Analytics), as well as open-source software (e.g., Stanford Network Analysis Project).
Lily Hu
Yale University
Professor Hu's work broadly concerns causal theorizing about the social world, with a particular focus on causal inference methodologies in the social sciences, how these various statistical frameworks treat and measure the “causal effect” of social categories such as race, and how such methods are seen to back normative claims about racial discrimination and inequalities broadly.
